walking and cycling in the downs

We are ideally placed for walking and cycling, being close to the South Downs Way and the Monarch's Way. You can park and walk directly onto the South Downs, following the old Leper's Way up onto the Downs with its iron age earthworks, and with magnificent views to Arundel castle, the Arun Valley, the sea and Isle of Wight.

Or follow the River Arun from Burpham village to the old church at South Stoke, mentioned in the Domesday book, and then north to Amberley or south to Arundel via the Black Rabbit. We have a great deal of wildlife here, from glow-worms to hares, pheasants and partridges as well as the rare chalkland butterflies and orchids. Old traditional flowers such as cornflowers, bluebells and poppies abound in the fields.

We offer secure storage for bikes, and packed lunches (bookable) for walkers and cyclists. We always have a stock of walking routes and copies of Ordnance survey maps.
