The historic city of Chichester, about 12 miles from Burpham, dates back to Roman times, and the medieval walls, built on Roman foundations, define the shape of the City. Chichester is rightly famed for its Cathedra, built in the 9th and 10th centuries, as well as the cultural events held by the Festival Theatre. Oh, and good shopping and restaurants. Chichester stands at the entrance to a great harbour, one of the earliest places where the Romans landed. The City is surrounded by reminders of its past: Bosham Harbour, Fishbourne and Bignor Roman Palaces, and the great houses and gardens of Goodwood, Petworth and West Dean. The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum is only a few miles away, as is Tangmere Aviation Museum.
